The Rocket & Indigo Name

I want to share a little about how the Rocket & Indigo name came about, and the creative philosophy at the heart of my work.

The natural world, especially plants, has always been a constant source of fascination and delight. One of my earliest designs was created from a drawing of rocket (aka arugula). It is a plant I’ve always loved, both for its vibrant flavour and the distinctive shape of its leaves. Rocket felt like the perfect symbol for creativity that starts small, grows naturally, and brings a little joy into the everyday.

Using my rocket leaf motifs as stripes in early experiment with screen printing in 2017.

Colour is also an important part of my world. Indigo blue has long been one of my favourite colours, with its calming depth and rich botanical history. Indigo dye is plant-derived too, which creates a lovely pairing with rocket and reflects my nature-inspired approach to design.

Together, Rocket & Indigo became a name that felt true to my creative roots: expressive, grounded in nature and full of colour.

To this day, my work is often influenced by plants, including those I keep in and around my studio. Their colour palettes and organic lines frequently spark the initial idea that evolves into a design. They are so treasured that I’ve even named some of my plants, particularly the funny ones.

“Marge” and “Rupert”

Just a couple of my studio plant buddies!

Thanks for letting me share a little of my story.

Have an inspiring day.
